TEFL Course

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

I decided to sign up for an online TEFL course. I’ve had experience teaching Maths and some bits of computer stuff but I’ve not actually taught English before. Though I have tutored people one-to-one when English was their second language. So I figured that doing a TEFL course could be quite a useful thing: brush up on my grammar and learn some techniques for teaching English.

And I’ve now signed up for one (http://www.teflcorp.com/tefl_certificate_tutor.htm). It’s 20 units and I’ve done Unit 1. I’m now waiting to hear back from my tutor as to whether I’ve passed it and if she’ll let me loose on Unit 2. 🙂 I’ve got 6 months to finish it but could potentially do it in a few weeks. It will depend on how fast I can work through the units. Not that I’m in that much of a hurry. I have about 6 months before I go away so as long as I get it finished this year sometime I’ll be a happy bunny.

The Decision

On Sunday the 11th of May I decided that now was the time for me to look at going overseas to do some volunteering. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a number of years but every other time I’ve thought about it, I’ve been more terrified than excited. It’s been something that I’ve wished I was able to do rather than something I actually wanted to do.

This time is different – this time it’s something I really want to do. And while I still have moments of being terrified, I’m so very, very excited and am convinced that now is the right time to go for it.

I did some internet research and found VESL which looked like a fabulous organisation with some really fabulous projects, and Sri Lanka seemed like a really fabulous place to go.

The Application

So I applied, and they invited me to London on Sunday the 8th of June for an Information and Selection Day.

Information and Selection Day

I went down to London on a gorgeously hot and sunny Sunday to meet some of the VESL organisers and past volunteers. The point of the day was for us potential volunteers to find out more about VESL and for VESL to find out about us and to see if they have a project that would suit our skills.

I loved it! Everything I heard made me even more excited. The people that I met impressed me and made me even more excited! The fact that the sun was shining made me even more excited! What can I say? I was excited! They told me they’d let me know on Tuesday by email whether they had a placement for me.

As you can probably guess from the fact that this blog exists, they did. And I got an email on Tuesday afternoon letting me know. (Though not before I’d completely exhausted my email checking finger!)
So now I’ve started making lists and re-writing my website and telling people and setting up this blog.

And I think that brings things pretty much up to date. 🙂

The beginning

Every journey starts with a single step and every blog starts with a single word. And not being one to skimp on words, I’ve started with 37 (and counting).

Welcome to my Sri Lanka blog!!
